Oman’s Green Data City: $300M Eco-Mining Farm

Green Data City has joined forces with the UAE’s Phoenix Group to inaugurate a groundbreaking $300 million environmentally conscious cryptocurrency mining farm in Oman, bolstering the nation’s ambitions for sustainable technological advancements. Oman’s innovative project, Green Data City, recently formalized a partnership with Phoenix Group, a prominent mining company headquartered in the UAE.

Green Data City Collaboration

The collaboration is geared towards establishing a state-of-the-art mining farm in Oman, with a substantial investment of $300 million. Scheduled to be situated within Green Data City, the upcoming crypto-mining facility is projected to have an impressive capacity of 150MW, as per an August 24 report. This significant initiative holds the potential to elevate Oman’s status as a prime destination for data centres and crypto-mining operations. Expected to commence operations by the second quarter of 2024, the mining farm is poised to become a symbol of Oman’s forward-looking approach to the digital era. Benefitting from Oman’s mild climate, particularly in the Dhofar Governorate, the farm’s cooling requirements will be substantially reduced, enhancing Oman’s appeal as an eco-friendly and sustainable mining hub.

To mitigate ecological impact, the mining operation will adopt modular techniques, while solar shades will harness renewable energy sources, according to the report. Additionally, the venture will tap into local talents, empowering individuals as technicians and promoting social responsibility alongside environmental consciousness. The project’s implications extend to the realm of education. Oman’s universities are set to collaborate with the initiative, providing students with practical experience in mining operations, nurturing a new generation of skilled professionals.

While Oman strives to make strides in the crypto mining sector, neighbouring countries such as Kuwait and China have intensified their crackdowns on mining activities. Kuwait recently imposed a complete ban on mining, while China initiated a mining ban as far back as 2019.
