Consensys Launches MetaMask Snaps

ConsenSys, a leading blockchain and web3 software company, has unveiled a groundbreaking development in the world of cryptocurrency with the launch of the first iteration of MetaMask Snaps to the public. This release represents a significant milestone in the evolution of MetaMask, the world’s leading self-custody web3 platform, offering users an unprecedented level of control and customization over their digital assets and experiences.

Vision for Web3 Customization

MetaMask Snaps introduces a novel concept by allowing third-party developers to create new features and functionalities that users can directly install into their wallets. In the past, MetaMask features were exclusively developed by ConsenSys-employed MetaMask developers. This shift marks a pivotal moment in the democratization of the platform, putting the power of innovation into the hands of developers worldwide.

The initial rollout of MetaMask Snaps includes a diverse array of 34 Snaps, each designed to enhance user experience and functionality. These Snaps cover essential aspects of the crypto landscape, including transaction insights, interoperability with non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) blockchains like Bitcoin, Solana, Cosmos, and EVM Layer 2 solutions like StarkNet, as well as notifications tailored for the web3 ecosystem.

One of the key highlights of MetaMask Snaps is its vision for permissionless innovation. In a web3 ecosystem that has seen rapid growth and diversification, MetaMask recognizes the importance of personalization and user-driven experiences. By empowering third-party developers to contribute to the platform, MetaMask aims to capture a wider spectrum of innovation happening within the web3 space. The ultimate goal is to create an open, permissionless system where any web3 developer can build a Snap and make it available to users. This collaborative approach is in line with MetaMask’s commitment to fostering a community-driven ecosystem that accelerates the development of creative solutions to complex challenges.

Power of Third-Party Innovation

Dan Finlay, Co-founder of MetaMask and Chief Ethos Officer at ConsenSys, emphasized the significance of this shift, stating, “This isn’t about accelerating technology for its own sake; it’s about accelerating the process of finding improvements in the ways we do things.” This open-minded approach invites the community to contribute their ideas and solutions, ultimately enriching the web3 experience. Crucially, third-party developers building Snaps will maintain ownership of their code and establish direct connections with their Snap’s users. This independence ensures that Snaps can be shipped and maintained separately from MetaMask, allowing for rapid development and deployment.

In the long term, MetaMask users will benefit from the convenience and versatility of a diverse array of Snaps tailored for various use cases and compatible with multiple protocols. The possibilities are boundless, with new features and functionalities emerging at a pace that MetaMask could not achieve alone. Christian Montoya, Product Lead for MetaMask Snaps, emphasized the commitment to permissionless innovation, stating, “Innovation thrives at the pace of the network, not just within an individual development team at ConsenSys.”
