Ethereum Goerli Testnet Merge Completed

Goerli, which is Ethereum’s most active test network, underwent a merge tonight creating history. This merge is the last milestone before the real update of Ethereum from a proof-of-work mechanism to a proof-of-stake model. This merge is hyped in the crypto-verse mainly because it will make the Ethereum blockchain more energy efficient.

During this dress rehearsal, the network upgraded to a proof-of-stake mechanism when the Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) crossed 10,780,000. This advancement has now taken us one step closer to the much anticipated Ethereum mainnet upgrade expected in the next month.

The Platform has been set for the ‘Merge’

For Ethereum’s merge in September, there were three key testnets: Ropsten, Sepolia, and Goerli. The first two had already been completed and now the third and final one has also been successfully tested. Although, all tests were significant but this testnet was the most important dry run for the Ethereum blockchain. The developers have said that although the test has been completed but they will not be able to confirm it before tomorrow.

With the completion of the Ropsten, Sepolia, and Goerli testnet, developers are optimistic about the mainnet upgrade of Ethereum. Although, the platform has been set for mainnet upgrade but the exact date of the merge has still not been disclosed and all we know is that it will be somewhere in September. Furthermore, it is expected that after the success of the Goerli testnet, the date for the mainnet upgrade will be announced within a week.

Thanks to this upcoming merge, Ethereum (one of the largest blockchains) will be able to lower its power consumption by up to 90% approximately. Due to this, the merge is regarded as the most important upgrade witnessed in the history of the Ethereum blockchain.

Why Goerli Testnet is Important?

Goerli and all other testnets (Ropsten and Sepolia) are of significant importance. It is because these testnets are much similar to the mainnet and enable developers to find bugs, errors, and security loopholes. So now, after the success of the crucial Goerli testnet, developers are in a position to deploy the upgrades to the mainnet with confidence.
